The best gift for a child is your time and attention– As the holidays approach and gift lists are being prepared give thought to experiences over expensive toys. Include your child in decorating, baking and talking about what others might like to receive. I have heard many parents exclaim “They were more interested in the box than the toy!” Of Course! A large box is an incredible creative opportunity and source for language development. It can be a car, or a house, or a drive-thru window, a hiding spot, an art project or a cage for a wild stuffed lion. The time you take to follow their interest, comment on their discoveries and join them in their imaginative exploration will build their social, creative and language skills.
